8th L-1 World Geography

Class VIII - Ch.1 World Geography*

*1. WHY DO ALL MAP PROJECTIONS HAVE DISTORTION?*

- Earth is oblate spheroid, round with bulge at equator.

- Flat paper cannot show round Earth correctly.

- Like orange peel tears when flattened, map stretches.

- So every projection distorts either size or shape.

*2. WHAT MAKES TIBETAN PLATEAU UNIQUE?*

- Highest and largest plateau in world - Roof of the World.

- Average height 4500m above sea level.

- Source of major Asian rivers - Indus, Ganga, Brahmaputra, Mekong.

- Very cold and dry climate, controls Indian monsoon.

*3. WHY CORAL REEFS ARE CALLED RAINFORESTS OF THE SEA?*

- Cover <1% of ocean floor but support 25% of marine life.

- Huge biodiversity like tropical rainforests.

- Provide food, shelter, breeding ground to thousands of species.

- Protect coasts from waves.

*4. HOW DO OCEANS REGULATE EARTH'S CLIMATE?*

- Absorb sun's heat and distribute through warm and cold currents.

- Example - Gulf Stream makes UK warmer.

- Give moisture for clouds and rainfall.

- Plankton in oceans give 50% oxygen and absorb CO2.

*5. MAIN REASON GREAT BARRIER REEF FACING THREATS?*

- Main reason is climate change and human activities.

- Rising sea temperature causes coral bleaching - corals turn white and die.

- Other reasons - pollution, overfishing, uncontrolled tourism.

*6. WHY AMAZON RAINFOREST CALLED LUNGS OF THE EARTH?*

- Largest rainforest, produces 20% of world's oxygen.

- Absorbs huge amount of CO2 like lungs purify air.

- Controls global climate and rainfall.

- Home to millions of plants and animals.

*7. TWO GEOGRAPHICAL FEATURES AND INFLUENCE*

- *A) MARIANA TRENCH - Ocean Trench:*

    - Deepest place - 11,000m, no light, high pressure, freezing.
    - Only special life like bacteria-eating snails live.
    - Human life not possible, but helps study life without sunlight.
    - Global importance - helps understand earthquakes and plate tectonics.

- *B) SAHARA DESERT - Hot Desert:*

    - Very hot, less rainfall, sandy and rocky.
    - Flora - cactus, thorny plants. Fauna - camel, scorpion, fox.
    - Human life - nomads live, grow in oasis, wear loose clothes.
    - Global importance - desert dust and winds affect world climate.

*8. OCEANS INFLUENCE CLIMATE AND TRADE*

- *Climate Influence:*

    - Indian Ocean - brings monsoon to India, makes India warm and humid.
    - Pacific Ocean - largest, causes El Nino / La Nina, affects world rainfall.

- *Trade Influence:*

    - Indian Ocean - old trade route, connects India, Africa, Gulf - oil and spices trade.
    - Pacific Ocean - connects USA, China, Japan, Australia - busiest for containers, fish and technology trade.

*9. ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE - REEF BLEACHING*

- *Causes:*

    - Global warming and rise in sea temperature.
    - Sea pollution and plastic.
    - Overfishing and damage by boats.

- *Impacts:*

    - Corals die, fish lose homes.
    - Fishermen lose income.
    - Coast loses natural protection from waves.

- *Solutions:*

    - Reduce CO2 and control global warming.
    - Ban overfishing and plastic dumping.
    - Make Marine Protected Areas and eco-tourism.

*10. IF I AM GEOGRAPHER - WHICH LANDSCAPE TO PROTECT*

- *Choice - Great Barrier Reef / You can write Himalayas also:*

    - I choose Great Barrier Reef.
    - Reason 1 - UNESCO World Heritage, 2000 km long, largest living structure.
    - Reason 2 - Supports 25% marine species, protects coast.
    - Reason 3 - If it dies, global biodiversity and climate will be badly affected.
    - Advice - Limit tourism, control pollution, reduce carbon emission.

*11. ROAD TRIP ACROSS TWO CONTINENTS - PITCH*

- *Choice - Asia and Europe:*

    - Reason - Both are connected by land, road trip possible.
    - Route - Dehradun -> Tibetan Plateau -> Central Asian Deserts -> Turkey -> Alps in Europe -> London.
    - What we see - Highest plateau, cold desert, hot desert, mountains and plains in one trip.

    - Learning - We can see all features studied in this chapter live and mark them on blank map.*
